SNL Superstar, Molly Shannon, will be in New York City at the end of this month, signing copies of her new children’s book, “Tilly the Trickster.”
Shannon appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1994 as a featured player and from 1995 to 2001 as a main cast member. During her tenure on SNL, an era arguably its funniest since its early days, she made famous numerous characters including Catholic schoolgirl nerd Mary Katherine Gallagher, “joyologist” Helen Madden, the desperately dull ‘Delicious Dish’ co-host Mary Rialto, and 50-year old dancer Sally O’Malley. She starred as Kath Day in the TV series Kath & Kim, and has appeared on Glee, Will & Grace, Scrubs and 30 Rock. As with most feature length films based on SNL sketches, Superstar was not nearly as funny as Mary Katherine Gallagher sketches; this having more to do with the fact that the structure of sketch comedy doesn’t really fit well into the feature length model — that’s why it’s called a sketch. Shannon is easily one of the top ten funny women in SNL history and a celebrity impressionist extraordinaire. Her roster includes Liza Minnelli, Monica Lewinsky, Donatella Versace, Anna Nicole Smith and Janis Joplin. Her debut children’s book “Tilly the Trickster” hit bookstores earlier this month.
