About the Author
Born in England and raised in New Mexico, I was the British kid that liked to draw. Upon my return to the UK, I studied art at Cirencester College and Swindon College, and then I worked in a call centre for nine years.
In 2010 I was made redundant, so I took a leap of faith and applied for a place on the MA Children’s Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. I graduated in 2013. Shortly afterwards, I signed my first book deal.
My debut, ‘The Queen’s Hat’, was published by Hodder Children’s in May this year. The response has been amazing. Since it’s release, I’ve held an event at Hay Festival, drawn in the window at Foyles Grand Opening Festival, and illustrated a ‘How to draw a corgi’ for the Guardian, amongst other things. More recently, ‘The Queen’s Hat’ was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
My second book, ‘Betty Goes Bananas’ was published in August by Oxford University Press, and it will publish in the States by Random House/Schwartz and Wade. My third book, ‘Please Mr Panda’ will publish in Jan ’15 by Hodder Children’s (and Scholastic in the States) and co-editions will publish in several languages, including French, French Canadian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean.
‘Green Lizards Vs Red Rectangles’ (Hodder) and a sequel to ‘Betty Goes Bananas’ are in line for publication over the next year or so. Currently, I am working on future publications in my Swindon studio.
What is the proper way to ask Mr. Panda for doughnuts?
Patiently and politely, Mr. Panda asks the animals he comes across if they would like a doughnut. A penguin, a skunk, and a whale all say yes, but they do not remember to say “please” and “thank you.” Is anyone worthy of Mr. Panda’s doughnuts?
Steve Antony has captured a cute panda, delightful animals hungry for doughnuts, and a manners lesson. With the black-and-white animals, plain backgrounds, and brightly colored doughnuts, Antony’s art is bold, striking, and engaging.
