Author Event: “Shadow Show” with Sam Weller and Mort Castle

In honor and celebration of Ray Bradbury, the contributing authors of the new book “Shadow Show” join us at our beloved book store for a magical evening of readings, signings, schmoozings and storytelling that no doubt will recall the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable writers. This is a must-not-miss event and we sure hope to see you there!

What do you imagine when you hear the name . . . Bradbury?

You might see rockets to Mars. Or bizarre circuses where otherworldly acts whirl in the center ring. Perhaps you travel to a dystopian future, where books are set ablaze . . . or to an out-of-the-way sideshow, where animated illustrations crawl across human skin. Or maybe, suddenly, you’re returned to a simpler time in small-town America, where summer perfumes the air and life is almost perfect . . . almost.

Ray Bradbury—peerless storyteller, poet of the impossible, and one of America’s most beloved authors—is a literary giant whose remarkable career has spanned seven decades. Now twenty-six of today’s most diverse and celebrated authors offer new short works in honor of the master; stories of heart, intelligence, and dark wonder from a remarkable range of creative artists.

Sam Weller is the author of Listen to the Echoes and The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury. He has lectured across the United States on the life and work of Bradbury. Weller is the former Midwest Correspondent for Publishers Weekly magazine. He has written for The Paris Review and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, and was a host for the Chicago Public Radio program Hello Beautiful! A frequent literary critic for the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Playboy.com, Weller is also a professor in the Fiction Writing Department at Columbia College Chicago.

Mort Castle is a horror author and writing teacher, with more than 350 short stories and a dozen books to his credit, including Cursed Be the Child (Leisure Books, 1994) and The Strangers. Castle’s first novel was published in 1967. Since then he has had pieces published in all sorts of places ranging from traditional lit mags to more off the wall or risqué markets. He has been nominated four times for the Bram Stoker Award for Short Fiction. A dedicated and talented writing teacher, Castle has been a working musician, a standup comic, a stage hypnotist, a high school English teacher (for 11 years), a magazine and comic book editor. He is currently a “freelance language arts consultant.” In that capacity, Castle is a writer in residence for three high schools, and teaching “Researching and Writing Historical Fiction” and “Story In Graphic Form” at Columbia College Chicago.
